NATIONAL SHRINE OF MOTHER OF GOD MARIJA BISTRICA
Excursion plan:
Departure after agreement and ride to the Shrine of Marija Bistrica which is located on the other side of mountain Medvednica, 42 km away from Zagreb. Arrival after less then one hour. Sightseeing of the cultural treasures of the small town Marija Bistrica and its Sanctuary which is known for its christian monuments.
Pilgrimage in the small town in croatian Zagorje started in the year of 1684. and in the year 1715. it was recognized and approved from the croatian Parliament (Sabor) as the croatian National Shrine. Pope Pio XI. gave in the year 1923. the Shrine the title of a small Basilica. In the year 1971. the International Marian Congress was held in Marija Bistrica and on this occasion it was proclaimed for the Croatian National Shrine. In the year 1998. Pope John Paul II. declared the beatification of Archbishop of Zagreb Alojzije Stepinac in the National Shrine of Marija Bistrica, which was a major event for the croatian people and croatian Church.
